Artists draw on the tradition of comics for exhibit
Review by Jennifer Dean
The Press-Enterprise

MEGAN WHITMARSH The Press-Enterprise Review Just in time for this year's Comic Con in San Diego, a collection of comics artwork from 16 artists is on display at the Riverside Art Museum in the exhibition "Strips, Scripts and Scapes."
Pieces include original comic strips, sketches, drawings and sculptures with styles that range from traditional to experimental.
"This exhibit is something different because it's all contemporary art, with artists working today pulling from the history of comics," said Lee Tusman, adult education curator at the museum. "They are drawing on traditions of collage, sculpture, bookmaking -- all of these other worlds, but using their comic background and inclinations to create contemporary art."
The artists are from Southern California or have spent a significant amount of time in the area, Tussman said. Participants are Sammy Harkham, Johnny Ryan, John Pham, Mike Bertino, Travis Millard, Rusty Jordan, Souther Salazar, Brent Harada, Walt Holcombe, Martin Cendreda, Mary Fleener, Taylor McKimens, Roberta Gregory, Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson and Megan Whitmarsh.
Whitmarsh's embroidered sculpture piece, titled "Giant Sculpture," dominates the center of the gallery.
"I worked on it for about two years," Whitmarsh said of the piece, which is a 5-foot-tall hand-embroidered pile of fabric trash. "I knew I wanted to make a big pile of handmade trash, but wasn't sure initially what it would entail." Her other two pieces in the show follow the same theme -- both are titled "Trash Mountain." One is a drawing, the other a smaller sculpture.
The Los Angeles-based artist also has three comic books on display in the reading room set up in the gallery.
"All my work has a similar theme," she said. "We live in a society with things I'm unhappy about -- we throw away so much. But I don't want to pretend I don't live here. So I turn things that are hard for me into something more friendly -- it's an optimistic take on consumer culture."
McKimens grew up in Winterhaven but is now based in Brooklyn, N.Y.
"I grew up looking at comics, but I do a lot of painting and sculpture," he said. "But they are based off comics in a lot of ways."
His instillation "The Drips" is part of the exhibition.
"A lot of that comic book was based loosely on where I grew up in Imperial Valley," he said. "As I made the comic book that all the work in the show comes from, I made each panel a painting and then put together the digital images on the computer. So they were kind of separate entities. Some were painted over after they were put in the book so some pieces in the book are different than in the show."
Despite the comic theme, the show's artwork is diverse.
"Even though many of these artists work together or know each other or are part of a like-minded scene, it's still very different," Tusman said. "It's really a funky, eclectic show."
