Team Painting: Stimulus Package
The work in this exhibition is made by a group of artists who were in residence with me at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in late February and early March 2009. I selected them from a pool of over one hundred applicants. One of the criteria I used in selecting these artists was evidence of hard work; not necessarily hard physical work, or dedicated repetitive activity—it was more than just that: what I was looking for in all of them was a sense of belonging to what they do, being embedded in it, and being free and trusting enough of their abilities to let the work play the leading role in their conceptual thinking.
Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed by the speed at which they set up and got to work. We agreed to work all day and meet as a group in the evening to talk about whatever was on our minds. It’s my long-held belief that one of the best ways to talk about art is to talk about everything but art, and our discussions fit the bill. Not long after, Erin Beaver gave us a moniker: Team Painting. It was a highly productive three weeks for everyone.
In considering a title for the show, I canvassed everyone in the group looking for ideas. Andrew Zarou suggested Stimulus Package, which dovetailed nicely with the notion of art as a thought accelerator—keen to assert its identity in the viewer’s eye, not surrendering to received notions of what is and is not acceptable in polite company. Some of the work here seems to be made in good taste, but don’t be fooled. These artists first viewers were themselves, closely followed by their colleagues. This is not an elitist attitude, it is evidence of the truth of each artist’s vision.
At ACA, all of these artists made Team Painting live up to its name by supporting and, well, stimulating each other, and in turn, inspiring us all.
